Estate of Ludwig Bemelmans

Ludwig Bemelmans was a painter, illustrator, and writer for both children and adults best known for the Madeline books, which rank among the most-honored and recognizable children’s book series of all time. Madeline was named a Caldecott Honor Book, and its sequel Madeline’s Rescue, won the Caldecott Medal and was a New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year. Bemelmans died in 1962. His grandson continued the Madeline series with three new picture books, Madeline and the Cats of Rome, Madeline at the White House, and Madeline and the Old House in Paris and two books for early readers: Madeline’s Tea Party and Madeline and Her Dog. Recent and forthcoming publications include a new series of board books and picture books from Viking that feature Madeline, and reissues of the beloved adult nonfiction titles Hotel Splendide and To the One I Love Best from Pushkin Press.
