We’re thrilled to share this news from The Hollywood Reporter‘s exclusive report:

The young adult contemporary romance novel, published last November, will be developed as a half-hour series with Meyer on-board to co-produce.

Marissa Meyer’s bestselling novel, Instant Karma, has been optioned by HBO Max, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively confirm.

The young adult contemporary romance novel, published by Feiwel & Friends last November, will be developed as a half-hour series with Meyer on-board to co-produce.

Described as “an irresistible hate-to-love romance,” Meyer’s story centers on overachiever Prudence Barnett who is known to quickly cast judgment on others. After dreaming of being able to inflict karma on the frustrating residents of her coastal town, Prudence is surprised when she wakes up with the sudden ability to cast instant karma on those around her. However, there’s one person powers backfire on, her lazy lab partner Quint. After volunteering at the rescue center where Quint works, Prudence begins to not only learn more about Quint but begins questioning her initial judgments of everyone around her.

Instant Karma marks Meyer’s first venture into the rom-com space, having previously published superhero tales, a retelling of the Queen of Hearts and a graphic novel duology. The New York Times bestselling author’s previous works include The Lunar Chronicles, HeartlessWires and Nerve and the Renegades trilogy.

In addition to writing, Meyer hosts The Happy Writer podcast. Meyer is represented by CAA and Jill Grinberg of Jill Grinberg Literary Management.
